B.K.S.Iyengar (Guruji) (December 14, 1918 to August 20, 2014) was a legend from Pune, India, who taught yoga in a unique way to all his students for many decades. He found the meaning of the ancient yoga sutras by his practical search and regular practice of yoga. He invented many props, including belts, blankets, special benches, ordinary chairs, and blocks to enable everyone to experience classic yoga poses, or asanas. His style of teaching yoga is followed around the world by teachers trained by him, and this has led to his method being called “Iyengar Yoga”. His son Prashant and daughter Geeta continue the tradition.
His many books, articles, CDs and DVDs have influenced teachers of yoga and yoga practitioners all over the world. His daughter Geeta and son Prashant are renowned teachers in their own right, and conduct classes at the Iyengar Institute in Pune. Many Canadian teachers have traveled there numerous times to study directly with the Iyengar family including Yoga North teachers, Drew Perry, Andrea Erb, Val Paape and visiting teachers Lisa Towson and Karin Rensfelt.
